Spring Tide Food Festival 2012

The third Spring Tide Food Festival takes place this weekend at the Burton Bradstock Hive Beach car park. The festival is a fantastic opportunity to try and buy the wonderful array of produce grown locally and to meet the people behind this local food movement. Give the supermarket a miss this weekend, everything you need to produce a meal from scratch will be here; spring vegetables and salad, fresh fish and local meat, artisan bread, local beers and wines, olives, preserves, what’s more you get to sample before you buy.

The food hall is under cover in the marquee, outside local arts and crafts are on display including demonstrations and information stands.

Watch House Café West Bay

The Watch House Café refurbishment was completed at Easter and it has already gained a loyal following. The entire space has been transformed – inside it is bright and spacious, decorated with quirky, retro seaside finds. Outside, the upper deck has been raised so that there are now wonderful views across to Lyme Bay, the lower seating area also affords sea views from the newly installed communal oak tables and benches.

There is more outside seating space to the front of the café with chrome tables and funky 50’s red chairs and umbrellas where a watchful eye can be kept on the children as they play on the beach while you relax.

The menu is just as exciting and innovative as The Hive Beach Café with seasonal daily specials and regular favourites. The Watch House is open for breakfast and lunch and an evening service will be available during the Summer Season.

Bridport Page to Screen Film Festival

Bridport’s fascination with film continues in April with the Page to Screen Film Festival – the only film festival held in the UK which celebrates the adaptation of books to film.

This year’s festival takes place at the Bridport Arts Centre, the Electric Palace Cinema and The Stable Bar and includes post film discussions, Q & A and introductions by leading Screenwriters, Directors, Journalists and Composers. Actor Sir Tom Courtenay will be hosting the pre-show talk of ‘The Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner” on Friday 13^th April.

The varied programme will appeal to all cinema goers with a keen interest in screen adaptation. Films include; Women in Love, The Small Back Room, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Woman in Black, Bunny Lake is Missing, and Salmon Fishing in The Yemen.

Old Fashioned Beetle Drive Fun in Burton Bradstock Village Hall

Ever heard of a beetle drive before? It has nothing to do with cars!!

A beetle drive is an old favourite – an easy game which requires a beetle card, pencils and dice and people!! Beetle down to Burton Bradstock’s village hall Friday 23rd March to experience it for yourself.

If you’ve never played beetle before, the aim of the game is to be the first player to draw a complete beetle – but you’ll get the hang of it during the practice rounds.

Entry is £5 and all profits go to the Starlight Children’s Foundation which grants wishes to seriously and terminally ill children.

Refreshments (tea/coffee and biscuits) are included in the entry price and a cash bar is available.

Tickets are available from Burton Bradstock Post Office on a first come, first served basis.

Beautiful Bridport Short Film

Bridport was abuzz this week when a short film, “Bridport by Night” surfaced on You Tube. Created by 22 year old Stephen Banks, the film is a self professed labour of love, shot over four months using time lapse photography. The spectacular beauty of the film has struck a chord with the local community and has gained an impressive following – 8,000 views in 4 days. Stephen would like the film to reach 12,977 views (Wikipedia’s population count of Bridport!)

Stephen moved to Bridport a year ago and fell in love with the area. He has produced a wonderful tribute and we look forward to his future work. Bridport has some amazing stars and we think he is one in the making.

Bridport’s healthy association with the arts has been further strengthened by the exciting new partnership between the Curzon Cinema and The Bridport Arts Centre.

The Arts Centre has recently become involved with the Independent film chain – Curzon Cinema as part of it’s new digital network. Curzon specializes in independent, World and European film and the forthcoming programme promises to be an exciting one, complimenting the existing programme of the Bridport Film Society.

Curzon films are shown weekly on Thursdays at 1.30pm & 7.30pm and Sundays at 3pm.

The Hive Beach Café Cookbook has been flying off the shelves since it’s publication in early December. It’s the ultimate gift or momento for anyone who has visited the café and wants to recreate a little bit of Dorset in their own kitchen.

Pop along to Waterstones in Bridport on Saturday 17th December at 10am and 3pm where chefs from the café will be signing copies of the book.

Burton Bradstock on Olympic Torch Route

Burton Bradstock will see the Olympic torch carried through it’s main road on the afternoon of July 12th 2012. 43 local villages will experience this memorable event as the flame passes through the South West of England on the 12th and 13th of July.

Former Olympian Shirley Parker from Burton Bradstock will be encouraging villagers and holiday makers to line the route on the day. Mrs Parker, represented Great Britain at the Olympics in Rome, 1960 and Tokyo, 1964 and is now Chairman and Coach at the West Dorset Fencing Club.

Bridport will join in with the festivities with live music and a party atmosphere in the town centre.
